Different measurement methods are applied for the characterization of materials by giving information about the bonds in the single or combined structure of the molecules.

BASIC PRINCIPLES

In spectroscopic methods, matter's emission, absorption, scattering, deflection of electromagnetic radiation and, in general, the interaction of matter with electromagnetic radiation and the results of this interaction are examined for analytical purposes.

Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy: It is basically based on the absorption of infrared light by the substance being examined. Absorption occurs when the required amount of wave energy for the vibration and rotation of the bonds in the molecule is sent by the device from the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unique chemical bands and bond groups have characteristic vibration frequencies. When infrared rays are sent, molecules absorb the ray only at their own vibration frequencies, and by measuring the amount of absorption, functional groups (-OH, -NH-, C=O, etc.) and structures in the substances can be determined. Infrared radiation is absorbed only by molecules with variable dipole moments. (For example, while diatomic molecules such as N2 and O2 do not give results in FTIR, the FTIR spectrum of HCl can be taken).

Dispersive Raman Spectroscopy: It works by scattering light inflexibly through the bonds in the molecule. Raman scattering occurs only when the bond polarization changes during vibration. Therefore, molecules that are infrared-inactive become Raman-active if they can change polarity. Therefore, these two spectroscopic methods are complementary to each other.

Materials and Application Areas

Infrared and Raman Spectrometers are sensitive measurement methods that can be used in all scientific studies in a wide range of scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, pharmacy and many engineering branches. With Infrared Spectrometer, material analyzes can be performed on solid, liquid and gas samples in the wide spectrum range (400-4000 cm-1) with a microscope, ATR and various accessories.

Raman Spectrometer, on the other hand, can perform analyzes with a microscope on solid and liquid samples in the range of 100-4000 cm-1. Analysis types are single point analysis, mapping, polarization, depth profile and slicing.
