The dynamic light scattering method (DLS) measures the intensity and variation of light scattered from small particles in a dilute solution. The change in the intensity of the scattered light depends on the particle's motion and accordingly the size of the particle, the viscosity of the medium, and the temperature. Two basic methods of light scattering characterize colloidal suspensions. The static light scattering method is used to determine the molecular weight, radius of rotation, and second viral coefficient of polymers. The dynamic light scattering method obtains hydrodynamic size, diffusion coefficient, dispersion index, and particle size distribution. Combining the two techniques provides information for determining the structure of the particle in solution.

Instrument: Malvern CGS-3

The ALV /CGS-3 compact goniometer system has been developed for the sequential and rapid application of dynamic (DLS) and static light scattering (SLS) techniques. The compact goniometer system includes a Helium-Neon laser light source and an attached fiber optic detector. This device is also suitable for measuring small scatterings emitted from particles. Analysis results are evaluated with Zimm, Berry, or Guinier curves, diffusion coefficient versus q2 (angle) curve.

Specifications

  • Molecular weight range: 102 - 1012 Dalton
  • Goniometer angle range: 15° - 150°
  • Temperature: 25°C - 60°C

Sample Requirements

It is 50mg for pure solids and 1ml for pure liquids. All chemical properties should be specified in colloidal solutions.

Applications

  • DLS/SLS techniques are suitable for micron particles, nano-sized particles, and macromolecules.
Analyzes of polymer solutions, colloidal systems, aggregates, micelles, biological systems (proteins, cells, liposomes), pigments, dyes, adhesives, and petroleum products are performed.
